If Jane Ciccone is any indication, Newburyport has far better fashion sense than a typical touristy coastal town. Ciccone, whose Jane Elizabeth line of jewelry is frequently pictured in fashion magazines and worn by celebrities, moved here with her husband, Jesse Ciccone, in June to recapture the feel of the San Francisco area, where they had lived until a year ago.

Ciccone tells me the design-your-own handbag studio, anna william (1 merrimac street, 978-465-4199) has become a bit of local landmark. "People come to Newburyport just for this," she says. "I've done a handbag party here with my sister and all her friends." Her creation, she says, is a tote bag in pink poodle print with leopard trim.
